What is Aging in Place?

Aging in place means remaining in one's home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level. It means the pleasure of living in a familiar environment throughout one's maturing years, and the ability to enjoy the familiar daily rituals and the special events that enrich all our lives. It means the reassurance of being able to call a house a "home" for a lifetime.      (Definition from NAHB)

Three Aging In Place Basic Needs:
*AIP without urgent needs: Planning for aging in place in the future or
incorporating easy mobility in the home for loved ones.
*AIP with progressive condition based needs: Making modifications for those
who have a chronic or progressive condition that will allow them to age in place.
*AIP with traumatic change needs: The necessity of modifications for those
who have experienced an abrupt or traumatic change.

*Jeremy Merseth, owner of Unique Designs Construction, is a Certified Aging In Place and Accessibility Specialist (CAPS).
